Self care and group therapy

Published: November 30, 2020

To agree to be a participant in a group therapy session it is important to understand what it is entails.

Group therapy is a form of therapy that involves working with several people at the same time. During a group session, group members are encouraged to share their experiences and work on understanding themselves in a compassionate and safe environment. Groups are just as effective as one-to-one therapy.

Hearing from others with similar issues helps you see that you’re not alone in having challenges, whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues or being aware that you need to practice self-care.
Group therapy on self-care can help uncover the root of failure to care for ourselves. It can teach us about ourselves and can be a way of uncovering areas that may be blocking our ability to overcome some issues. Group therapy sessions offer a confidential, safe space for group members to gain self awareness and awareness of others.

Self-care encourages self-improvement. When our self-esteem and self-awareness improves, it has a positive effect on our overall mindset. This, in turn, enables us to care for our friends and loved ones in a way that we might not have been able to do before. We all have different requirements for self-care, but in general, the goals of self-care are to find a state of good mental and physical health, reduce stress, meet emotional needs,
maintain our relationships. Self-care, is not a selfish act and by not taking care of your own emotional and physical needs you may begin to experience a decline in your own emotional or physical state.

Sometimes we attempt to meet the needs of family members, employers, children, friends, or society in general before meeting our own needs. Working to please and care for others often interferes with our self-care routine and can take a toll on our mental health.

Self-care is something that we cannot and should not compromise on. We all have mental health, and it is vital that we nurture our health and well-being by practising self-care!
